Der Name der Datei ist “FOI2009.zip”, womit wohl Bezug genommen wird auf den amerikanischen Freedom Information Act, der jedem US-Bürger das Recht zubilligt, Zugang zu Dokumenten der Exekutive (der Regierung) der Vereinigten Staaten zu verlangen..

Die erwähnte Datei ist 61 Megabyte groß und enthält neben verschiedenen Dokumenten und Code-Dateien auch über Tausend E-Mails. Die betreffenden Dateien scheinen von der britischen Climate Research Unit (CRU) zu stammen und enthalten unter anderem Korrespondenz zwischen Klimaforschern.

Once Tim’s got a diagram here we’ll send that either later today or

I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps
to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd from
1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline. Mike’s series got the annual
land and marine values while the other two got April-Sept for NH land
N of 20N. The latter two are real for 1999, while the estimate for 1999
for NH combined is +0.44C wrt 61-90. The Global estimate for 1999 with
data through Oct is +0.35C cf. 0.57 for 1998.

Bislang ist nicht bekannt, ob die Dateien wirklich von der Climate Research Unit stammen, aber allein der schiere Umfang der Dateien und die riesige Anzahl der E-Mails (es sind 1073) lässt eine Fälschung als sehr unwahrscheinlich erscheinen.
Steve McIntyre, der als “Zerstörer des Hockey-Sticks” bekannt gewordene kanadische Mathematiker jedenfalls hat nach erster Einschätzung den Eindruck, dass die Dateien tatsächlich von CRU stammen:

I made up a pdf of the emails to help browse through them and it’s over 2000 pages. Every email that I’ve examined so far looks genuine. There are a few emails of mine that are 100% genuine.
It is really quite breathtaking.
Und atemberaubend wäre es in der Tat, wenn sich diese Geschichte als wahr und die Dateien als echt erweisen würden. In den nächsten Tagen werden sich Heerscharen von skeptischen Wissenschaftlern und interessierten Laien über den Datensatz hermachen. Spannende Zeiten stehen also bevor.
Und der Zeitpunkt für diesen Zwischenfall hätte vermutlich für die Klimaforschung schlechter nicht sein können. Gerade jetzt, wo sich alle mit Hochdruck auf die Klimakonferenz in Kopenhagen vorbereiten sind negative Presse oder gar peinliche Enthüllungen das letzte, was diese Herren gebrauchen können.
Die nächsten Tage werden auf jeden Fall eins werden – extrem interessant.
